Unlocking EQ

Unlocking EQ

Reach new levels of performance by developing your team's Emotional Intelligence.

"75 percent of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies, including inability to handle interpersonal problems; unsatisfactory team leadership during times of difficulty or conflict; or inability to adapt to change or elicit trust. "
-Center for Creative Leadership

What is Unlocking EQ?

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions and handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

The skills of EQ are not locked away, accessible only to a select few who were born with natural abilities. EQ skills can be learned. The Unlocking EQ program teaches people to be aware of their emotional states and how those states impact others. Once people have awareness, the program teaches practical skills and tactics for using EQ in the workplace.

Benefits of Unlocking EQ
  • High EQ teams have more effective individual interactions, higher group productivity, and make high cross-functional contributions.
  • Research shows that high EQ teams are better able to achieve goals, build trust, complete tasks quickly, and manage stress during emotionally charged situations.
  • EQ explains 58% of success in all types of jobs, and 90% of top performers are also high in emotional intelligence. Investing in the EQ of your team will lead to better performance.

Program Format and Delivery

The Unlocking EQ program has three parts:
  • An online learning curriculum consisting of videos and reading that individuals complete.
  • Personal reflection to help participants assess their own EQ strengths and weaknesses.
  • Group workshops focused on understanding other people's perspectives and applying EQ to daily work.
The program delivery can be customized to your organization's needs. An example delivery is a 16 week program. Participants would complete the online curriculum prior to a weekly live workshop on Zoom or other video conferencing platform. Onsite delivery is also possible.

Unlocking EQ Topics

EQ impacts people's performance and interactions in nearly every aspect of their work. The Unlocking EQ program focuses on 15 specific areas that require high EQ:
  • Instilling Trust: Trust is the belief in someone’s reliability, truth, and ability. Every person we engage with effectively scores their level of trust in us based on their perceptions of our honesty and integrity.
  • Communicating Effectively: Effective communicators use language and imagery to build shared consciousness with their audience in a one-on-one, team, or organization-wide setting.
  • Driving Engagement: Effective leaders actively seek to build engagement through value alignment, support, participation and equity. This binds people together around a shared purpose and inspires team members to exhibit discretionary effort.
  • Learning Nimbly: While we are masters of things we have done before, it takes a rare set of skills to do something for the first time – to solve new problems, try new things, to learn quickly in new situations.
  • Collaborating: Collaboration eliminates blind spots, provides context and increases shared understanding of how work systems function.

  • Showing Courage: Leadership is a courageous act. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is feeling the fear and doing hard things anyway. Courage is stepping beyond what is known and comfortable and willingly operating in the growth zone.
  • Valuing Differences: Great leaders identify and amplify differing perspectives to enable teams to discover the best path forward.
  • Navigating Ambiguity: High-performing leaders are comfortable with the unknown and commit to processes that clarify objectives and the roles required to meet them.
  • Managing Conflict: Managing conflict is more than just suffering through the experience. It is intentionally engaging in healthy conflict in search of the best outcomes for all stakeholders.
  • Persuading: Exemplary leaders carry with them significant influence. They do not apply uncomfortable pressure but prefer using emotion and logic to present ideas and frame their position.
  • Ensuring Accountability: To be accountable is to answer for specific actions or decisions. Accountability is assuming personal responsibility for identifying and filling the needs of other people, our work teams and the businesses we are responsible for leading.
  • Defaulting to Action: Initiating meaningful action requires courage, energy, and passion. Sustaining momentum requires achievement and grit. Taking action is about being practical and “getting shit done”.
  • Balancing Stakeholders: Balancing stakeholders is an ongoing alliance-building process that includes understanding and respecting the aspirations of stakeholders within and outside of your team or organization.
  • Making Quality Decisions: A quality decision is carefully vetted and considers its full impact. While avoiding “analysis paralysis,” leaders and teams take the time to consider multiple viewpoints, outcomes, potential obstacles, and opportunities of the decision.
  • Showing Resilience: Resilience is the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions or challenges and improve our effectiveness as a result of them.
