Magic in the Room #20: Mindfulness With Special Guest: Oksana Esberard

July 6, 2020

“Mindfulness” has become a buzzword in recent years, but what exactly is it, and how can it help us perform better as individuals and as leaders? In this episode, mindfulness & meditation coach, mental health practitioner, speaker, and best-selling author  Oksana Esberard  joins Hannah and Luke to discuss mindfulness as a high-performance practice, and the benefits of a holistic approach to mental health. You will learn specific mindfulness practices for individuals and teams to gain greater clarity and purpose.

Oksana leads corporate mindfulness programs and retreats for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and Inc. 500 companies around the world. In her book,  Next Level You , she shares how she transformed her life through mindfulness and meditation. In today’s episode, the team discusses how her approach can help listeners navigate the turbulent, information-overloaded world and change their life from busy to balanced and energized.

Luke explores the intersection between an organization built on purpose and people who understand their emotional needs, emotional intelligence, and their daily fulfillment need. He also shares how he works with individuals to develop and do the reflection work necessary to clarify their purpose and what they want to be committed to as they move forward in life with intention.

Many are already searching for an organization where they can contribute while also helping them fulfill their personal purpose. Luke shares how these people are also helping organizations create an authentic purpose and clarify what their purpose is. Understanding your vows and commitments is incredibly useful in assisting businesses to get clear about the people in their team who understand themselves and their own motivation.

Luke and Oksana discuss their observations on the interplay between intentional purpose, goals, and clarity around what an organization or an individual wants to accomplish. They explore the interesting parallel that begins when we get out of bed in the morning while being guided by our emotional and mental health.

Oksana explains that when people are confused, it creates uncertainty, which quickly turns into fear of the unknown. But if an organization can create clarity and purpose within their teams, it also provides the stability that enables teams to be creative and out of the box thinkers. These contrasting experiences highlight the differences between a fulfilling job and a role in which an employee is fearful of doing something wrong.

Clarity creates stability, and instability establishes the ground for creativity. Ultimately leaders need to become more comfortable having these uncomfortable conversations and not be afraid to show vulnerability and create an environment where it’s safe to experiment. If you make teams feel safe to try new things, it will also give room for creativity and experimentation.

As someone who has been experimenting with mindfulness and incorporating into his own life, Luke shares how it has helped with is clarifying choice and giving him opportunities to do something on purpose, rather than default into a habit that he wasn’t aware of. The team also shares tools and techniques that have proved to be a game-changer in big meetings.

However, your hosts would like to hear more about the mindfulness practices that have enabled individuals and teams in your organization to gain greater clarity and purpose.

In this episode of Magic in the Room, Luke, Hannah, and Chris delve into the timely topic of hope versus cynicism in leadership, particularly in a world rife with uncertainty and negativity. The discussion focuses on whether hope alone is sufficient for transformational leadership or if, in environments steeped in cynicism, leaders must amplify their energy and intentionality, sometimes matching the intensity of cynics to move organizations forward. They examine the "hope recipe," which involves envisioning a better future, creating a pathway, and having agency. They also discuss the difficulty of maintaining agency when systems, culture, or fatigue threaten to sap it. They differentiate between strategically "letting go" and simply "giving up," emphasizing the importance of support, accountability, and self-awareness as antidotes to cynicism.

In this episode of "Magic in the Room," Luke, Hannah, and Chris unpack the difference between being busy and being truly impactful, exploring why organizations often get stuck in high-activity, low-impact cycles. They identify five common contributors: compliance-heavy environments, resistance to change, disconnected decision-makers, fear-driven “CYA” cultures, and firefighting systems that reward heroics over long-term strategy. From there, they highlight what creates real impact: clarity of purpose, agency, curiosity, intentionality, and the discipline to question assumptions and align action with a meaningful “why.” The conversation encourages leaders to build awareness of their strengths, design systems that support healthy impact, maintain congruence between their public and private influence, and cultivate the kind of presence that can genuinely move a room.
