What Makes For a Good Day at Work?

What helps to make a good day for an employee?  According to Gallup’s global research on employee well-being, it includes factors such as having a life full of love, having the energy to do what you want to do and giving back to one’s community.

One-third of global employees strongly agree with the statement, “The mission and purpose (what is given back to one’s community) of my organization makes me feel my job is important.”  By moving that ratio to 8 in 10 employees, business units have realized the following:

  • 51% reduction in absenteeism,
  • 64% drop in safety incidents and
  • 29% improvement in quality

DTE’s leaders dedicated themselves to the purpose and helping employees connect their work with the ongoing well-being of their communities.  As people judged the purpose to be authentic, a transformation began to take place. Engagement scores climbed and DTE’s stock price more than tripled from the end of 2008 to the end of 2017.

The bottom line

All sorts of goodness, both at home and work, happen when an employee feels their work and organization are helping their community prosper.
